On March 26, 2009, Finance Minister Dwight Duncan presented Ontario’s 2009 budget, which aims to assist Ontario families in surviving the uncertain economic times the province and global economies are currently facing, and bring prosperity back to Ontario by making the economy stronger and more competitive. The McGuinty government plans on accomplishing this by creating jobs for today and tomorrow, investing in children and families, and introducing far-reaching tax reform. (more)
Newfoundland and Labrador Budget 2009

On March 26, 2009, Finance Minister Jerome Kennedy delivered Newfoundland and Labrador’s 2009 budget. A reversal of fortune from the past two years, this year’s budget forecasts a deficit of $750 million, which the government largely attributes to softening demand for oil, the impact of stock market declines on pension fund values, and the federal government’s decision to eliminate benefits under the Atlantic Accord. Manitoba Budget 2009

On March 25, 2009, Minister of Finance Greg Selinger presented the 2009 Manitoba budget. The province’s tenth consecutive balanced budget focuses primarily on stimulating the economy without sacrificing Manitoba’s future. Boasting the most stable economy in Canada over the past decade, the government plans to honor all 2009 tax relief commitments introduced in previous budgets while continuing to invest in infrastructure, education, training and healthcare. Quebec Budget 2009

On March 19, 2009, Minister of Finance Monique Jérôme-Forget tabled Quebec's 2009-2010 budget. The budget was developed in consultation with Quebecers and the measures implemented in the budget reflect the needs expressed by taxpayers. The measures in the budget will inject an additional $3.4 billion into the Quebec economy in 2009 and 2010. (more)
Saskatchewan Budget 2009

On March 18, 2009, Minister of Finance Rod Gantefoer presented the 2009-2010 Saskatchewan budget. This is the second budget tabled by the Saskatchewan Party government and the province’s 16th consecutive balanced budget. Despite recessionary pressures and uncertainty across the country, Saskatchewan is forecasting economic growth in the upcoming year. (more)
Department of Finance News Release: Government Announces 2009 Automobile Deduction Limits and Expense Benefit Rates for Business

The Minister of Finance has announced the automobile expense deduction limits and the prescribed rates for automobile operating expense benefits that will apply for the 2009 taxation year. Specifically, the rates in effect will be as follows:

The capital cost allowance limit for passenger vehicles purchased in 2009 will remain at $30,000, plus applicable federal and provincial sales taxes. This results in a maximum allowable input tax credit of $1,500 for GST paid (or $3,900 for HST paid) for a passenger vehicle acquired in 2009. (more)

2009 Federal Budget

On January 27, 2009, Finance Minister James Flaherty presented Canada’s 2009 Federal Budget, including the highly anticipated economic stimulus package. Providing almost $30 billion in support to the Canadian economy, the government’s Economic Action Plan includes: personal and corporate income tax reductions; a temporary tax credit for home renovation projects; tax relief for first time home buyers; measures to improve access to financing; improvements to the employment insurance system; support for industries affected by the current economic downturn; and massive spending on infrastructure. British Columbia Budget 2009

On February 17, 2009, Finance Minister Colin Hansen presented British Columbia’s 2009 budget. This year’s budget focuses primarily on addressing the impact of the global economic downturn on the province and, in an effort to provide “stability and confidence” to British Columbia residents, the government has confirmed that it will run its first deficit in five years, rather than raising taxes or severely curtailing spending on key programs. Newfoundland and Labrador Tax on Insurance

While an official date for tabling the 2008 Newfoundland and Labrador Budget has yet to be released, Premier Danny Williams announced today that his government will eliminate the province’s 15 per cent retail sales tax on insurance premiums. This change, effective immediately, will be retroactive to January 1, 2008. Consequently, insurers will be required to refund any tax collected on new contracts and renewals purchased on or after January 1, 2008 and then apply to the Department of Finance to recover amounts refunded.
